Well a few weekends ago the US NAvy came to town..! Which needless to say was hilarious. Was so stange seeing so many white people everywhere (and blck people- even stranger!) Were we live in Wanchai there are loads of strip bars and brothels so it was v amusing to walk down the street to the pub and see everyone of them brimming with sailors! They were even getting dragged in off the street. Had a wicked night out anyway, chatting to them, made a fun change from old drunken white men with wives etc at home ;) Then last weekend I had my "English Funfair" at school, yes I had to go in on a Saturday! When I say funfair, it was actually about 10 stalls with games involving English that we were trying to get prospective P6 students to play in a bid to make them think our school is great, which it is of course! So last week was pretty mad preparing for that. This week has been a bit quiter, have tomorrow of as today and yesterday were sports day. It's a very serious occasion here, so many kids were stretchered off, was quite hilarious! I even won a medal... Came third in the teacher's javelin, another bizarre HK experience! I had to collect my medal during the closing ceremony, walk through all the gathered kids, was chuffed to hear lots of cheers though- at least they weren't booing! Tomorrow night we're having our Chatteris "Christmas Party" We've hired out a victorian tram and are boogying for a few house before heading to Lang Kwai Fong for some Cavern action... Can't wait! Enjoy the photos!

Busy, busy, busy

Things have been soooooooooooooooooooo busy recently! At the beginning of November I had a few days off school (kind of like mid-term but not really) which was really nice, but I kind of felt that when I went back to work I had taken 3 steps forward and 2 back... Took me a while to get back into the swing of things. I also had my school picnic during that week, which is basically when each year goes to a different place around HK and has a bbq. I went with the S6 to Stanley Beach which was fun. It's crazy though, they're allowed to light their own bbq's, I def thought I was going to come home with 3rd degree burns! Since I've been back at school it's been go go go. My three S2 (Pinky, Apple and Jessica) students that I've been training for the speech festival are taking part in the competition tomorrow so i'm nervous for them. They'll be great though, they've worked so hard. I'm really proud of them :) Along with training them I've been training a whole S3 class (40 students) for the Choral Speaking part of the competition. They have a few more weeks to train, and are coming along nicely. Today I was stuck at school till about 5, was fun though but now I'm totally knackered. My schools hosting an 'english funfair' on the 2nd of december which i have been made project manager for... great! So I've got a lot of work to do for that, along with lessons etc. Am def looking forward to Xmas hols. Not long to go now.

Halloween Highjinks

<img style="WIDTH: 171px; It's about an hour away from HK on a high speed turbo boat. When we arrived Ben decided it would be a good idea to hire a tuk tuk to take us from the ferry terminal to the old part of Macau... there began possibly the most scary/funny/hilarious 20mins of my life! Me and Nikki were in one and Ben and Rob in another. They are basically littly buggies with bikes on the front. Our driver was the oldest most decrepit looking man I have ever seen, he barely looked like he could walk, let alone pedal the two of us along motorways, up hills and round round-a-bouts! Oh yes, these weren't little country roads we were meadering along, they were motorway-type roads and streets packed with cars. Me and Nikki spent most of the journey wetting ourselves at how hilarious it all was. The poor man did well, there was one point when we went up a slight slope where he stopped and I thought we were going to have to get out a push but luckily he recovered and carried on our death trip! He also took it upon himself to be our makeshift tour guide... which entailed turning around to speak to us every so often (whilst veering towards the traffic) simply smiling, saying "Casino" and pointing... I should say that basically the only reason anyone ever goes to Macau is to gamble, it's like the blackpool of China... classy! Bless him though because everytime ben turned around to take a picture of us he smiled. So anyway, we survived the ride, even though I was reluctant it turned out to be the best part of the day. We had a wee wander round the centre, where we were randomly interviewed by a bunch of school girls for a school project, had some food, and basically got the ferry back. Was a really fun day.

These are some photos my friend Ben took recently when we went on a boat trip to Lamma Island. Basically this means that lots of English activites were organised for the kids and run by English Ambassadors (keenos!) They had song dedications, tonge twisters, puzzles and games. For everything they did they would get a stamp and then if they filled up their vard they'd get a prize at the end of the day. It was quite weird to walk down to the playground to here Shayne Ward blasting out! Who knew he'd gotten this far! Not I!! I think this is also the only country on the planet where Westlife are still cool. Well, I'm glad for them that there's still at least one ;) The kids would also get a stamp if they talked to me or chris so we were literally accosted by hundreds of kids. Was really fun! Made up for the fact that I had two of my nightmare classes yesterday. I proplerly lost it with a few kids. I sent one girl out of the classroom, and when i let her back in she sat giving me evils the rest of the lesson, made me laugh! Just chilling today, am out to meet duncan (one of the old project managers tonight) as he's visiting from Austrailia- where he moved. So that should be fun. And tomorrow we're off on another junk boat trip to lamma and stanley. Haven't been to Lamma Island yet so am quite looking forward to it. We booked our flights for xmas this week. We had fun last weekend going round loads of travel agents trying to explain that we wanted to go to thailand for xmas! Most told us that xmas prices don't come out till november. I asked my Net teacher about this and she said it was bollocks so we decided this is what they tell the white people so they pay higher prices cos they think we;re all rich- we're not!

The madness

Things have been quite stressful lately. Not really sure if i'm cut out for this teaching thing. I find it tough trying to squeeze everything i have to do in the time i have to do it, cos i don't really want to spend my evenings and weekends doing work stuff, i'm not paid nearly enough for that! One of my fellow GELTS (that's what we're called) actually left cos she wasn't enjoying it and I know a few more that are having similar thoughts. I think the main problem for me is that i feel totally unprepared when i go into a lesson, and for those of you that know me you'll realise how much that stresses me out ;) It's a bit like sink or swim, but if you sink it's in front of 40 pairs of eyes... and sometimes a local teacher. People here don't give praise EVER so i have no idea whether they are pleased with my lessons or what! I knew when I came out here that the first few months were going to be the toughest so in that way it's come as no surprise that it's difficult, knowing that however, doesn't make it any easier to get up in the mornings. It's not all bad, I really do enjoy most of my lessons, it's more the feeling of trepidation i get in the run up that I don't like. Apart from the teaching I like living in Hong Kong, I think if I didn't it would maybe sway me more towards jacking this in.

The past few weeks

Well it's been a busy few weeks here in HK. School has been keeping me VERY busy. It's actually quite stressful standing up in front of 40 kids 4 times a day, delivering a lesson for 40 mins!! I've calculated that I see over 200 kids a week! No wonder I'm struggling to remember names. I have had a few more classics though. I have a chicken wing, johnson's baby, doctor and crazy! I can hardly bring myself to call their names out in class. My favourite though is chicken wing... classic! So in the past few weeks i've been stressing about teaching quite a lot. I have S3's that are just totally mad, there is actually no way to control them, believe me I've tried. I had to get one class to come and see me at breaktime last week to tell them off because they'd been so badly behaved in my class. I hate doing it cos ultimately I want them to enjoy my classes and have fun so it sucks to be shouting ALL the time. I have that new teacher thing of having a permanent sore throat from all the shouting i've been doing. When I come home I'll prob deafen you all with my booming voice! :) It was national day at the start of October which meant we had a long weekend, yay! We hired a boat and watched the fireworks from the boat in the harbour, the view was amazing, just what you'd expect from Hong Kong. Then last Friday it was the Mid Autumn Festival. They celebrate by eating mooncakes, disgusting creations made from pastry, lotus paste and salted duck eggs! They also have ice-cream mooncakes which seem like an altogether better idea! It's a celebration of the full moon so there is also a lot of moonwatching and lantern displays. We all went to victoria park on hk island to look at the 'world of lanterns' which was pretty cool. we also saw some Chinese Opera and traditional dancers. Chatteris work with local university students helping run their english club so i've joined in with that. It's called big mouth corner and basically once a week we go to poly u university and chat to the students... and we get paid! They also ran a cantonese class for us which was really fun. I can now say a few phrases really badly! Every word they have has six tones, giving it six different meanings depending on how you say it... so i've discovered that when i say 9 i am actually saying penis!! Hence I'm never saying 9 ;) It can also mean dog and plastic so all round i think it's best avoided! So anyway am keeping pretty busy. I also have to start training kids for the annual speak festival in November. Basically, all the schools in HK enter kids and its a big deal. I have four soloists and a class of 40 for the choral speaking comp... no pressure then! I don't really have a scoob what's going on... will keep you posted. That's all for now

22nd September

Well, I've just finished my second week of work and I have to say it went a LOT better than the first. After being taken advantage of a bit in the first week by these hormonal teenagers this week I laid down the law!! Step in super tough hannah! ;) I think a week of lessons on the school rules should just about do it! Did you know that in Hong Kong they have a discipline master? It's his sole job to discipline the students. They are all s*** scared of him (and so am I) so all you have to do is threaten to pass their name on to him and that shuts them up pretty quickly... nice! I do absolutely love some of my classes, there are some really nice kids. I know I shouldn't have favourites, but I already do. There's an S6 called fortune who is absolutely lovely, he always chats to me if he sees me which is nice in a school where everyone is speaking a different language. Also this week on thurs I went out with all the other English teachers for a meal after school cos one of the teaching assistants was leaving and that was really nice. I was a bit worried about the other teachers because the girl who was doing my job last year left me some tips and said that it would be hard to integrate, but i have found the exact opposite. Today I took part in my first lunch broadcast... basically at lunchtimes there's a radio show which lasts about 10mins that goes out over the PA in every classroom in the school. Today the S7's interviewed me about my views on smoking, I was actually quite nervous. It was really funny though because right before we were about to start one of the boys broke the mic, he pulled it right off of its stand so we were all rushing trying to get it back on before the start. I'm getting a sore throat from all the loud speaking I've been doing, def a case of new teacher syndrome.

September 13th

Well, it's my third day of proper teaching (if you could call it that!) In Hong Kong the children have to choose and English name for themselves to go by. So far I've had an Elvis, Golf (yes as in the sport), Fortune, Lemon, Gash (really horrible I can hardly say it) to name but a few! In training I also had a frog and fanny!!! I hope these kids never come to an English speaking country and have to introduce themselves! I've had two S4 lessons so far today and they went slightly better than my initial lessons. Although I'm still having issues with technolgy. Yesterday, I went up and down five flights of stairs about 6 times in a bid to set up the powerpoint i'd prepared for the lesson. In the end I couldn't use it, but my class didn't show up anyway so oh well! I felt quite disheartened yesterday after a string of disasters. I'm really struggling to contain the s3 but i'm hoping that it has more to do with their hormones than it does my teaching..? It doesn't help that their is literally a typhoon going on outside today. By the time I got to school today I was soaked through, the rain was actually coming through my umbrella it was that wet! There's a typhoon storm level one warning, don't really know what that means, all I know is that when it's a red warning we don't have to come to school... I kept watching the news this morning with the vain hope that the storm would get worse. Mind you, compared to the rain at home this is a bloody monsoon, I have never seen rain like this. I thought this was meant to be summer?

September 11th

So I finished my first day of teaching and came through it more or less unscathed! My third class was a bit of a nightmare... the teacher was observing which was making me nervous anyway, but then I discovered that I was going to have 40 kids to teach... yes 40! Bloody massive. In training the most we ever had was 12 and the max i'm meant to have in school is 20! So yes 40 was a slight challenge. I'm going to have to have a drastic re-think because most of the activities and tasks I have just won't work with that large a class... help! The good news is that my last class of the day just didn't turn up! It was another s3 class so i was quietly relieved because it was the s3 earlier in the day that was a bit of a disaster... am i looking forward to tomorrow... what do you think?!

10th September

I really love the part of hong kong that i'm living in. among the chatteris people it has it's own slogan and everthing 'wanchai till i die!' cos it's where all the fun happens. our apartment building has also been renamed the wanchai tower of love due to the fact that as 8 of us live here it has now become a central meeting point for everyone. my effort to get everyone to start calling it the W.C failed miserably, i was thinking like the O.C, but everyone else thought i was joking... i couldn't figure out why until it suddenly dawned on me that WC actually meant toilet... d'oh! oh well... went out last night in wanchai and lang kwai fong. was fun but am now feeling totally rough.

8th September

OH... I'M IN A SCHOOL IN KWUN TONG CALLED LEUNG KWAI YEE. KWUN TONG ITSELF IS QUITE A POOR AREA, BUT THE SCHOOL ITSELF IS LOVELY, AND ALL THE KIDS SEEM REALLY NICE. MY TEACHER IN CHARGE IS GREAT, MR CHIN, ALTHOUGH HE'S VERY BUSY MOST OF THE TIME SO I DO FEEL LIKE A BIT OF A BURDEN AT TIMES. TODAY ME AND CHIRS HAD TO GET UP ON THE STAGE IN FRONT OF THE ENTIRE SCHOOL AND INTRODUCE OURSELVES WHICH WAS REALLY SCARY. IT WENT WELL THOUGH, ESPECIALLY WHEN CHRIS STARTED TO SING A POP SONG IN CANTONESE, THEY LOVED IT! AT SCHOOL I HAVE MY OWN DESK IN THE STAFF ROOM AND MY OWN LAPTOP! YES!! THE STAFF ROOMS IN HONG KONG ARE VERY DIFFERENT TO THE UK. UNLIKE AT HOME, WHERE TEACHERS USE THE STAFF ROOM FOR A SIT DOWN, CUP OF COFFEE OR CRAFTY FAG, STAFF ROOMS HERE ARE ACTUALLY USED FOR WORK! THEY ARE CRAMMED WITH DESKS THAT ARE IN TURN FILLED WITH CRAP SO THAT IT PILES OVER THE TOP. CHRIS AND I WERE SAYING THAT WE NEEDED TO GET MORE STUFF ON OURS JUST SO THAT IT LOOKS LIKE WE'RE BUSY. THERE ARE NO SOFAS OR ANYTHING! STRANGE! THE CHINESE ALSO HAVE MAJOR ISSUES WITH TOILET ROLL... MOST PLACES THAT YOU GO WILL HAVE ONE TOILET ROLL OUTSIDE ALL OF THE STALLS THAT YOU HAVE TO RIP SOME FROM BEFORE YOU GO IN. IT'S VERY STRANGE. MY SCHOOL IS EVEN STRANGER... EACH TEACHER HAS THEIR OWN TOILET ROLL WHICH THEY KEEP IN THEIR TOILET ROLL LOCKER IN THE BATHROOM, I KID YOU NOT! WHAT WAS BAD FOR ME WAS THAT I DIDN'T GET MY TOILET ROLL TILL DAY TWO... YUP! I HAVE TO ADMIT THAT I AM ALSO STRUGGLING SLIGHTLY WITH THE FOOD. MOST PLACES THE MENUS ARE ALL IN CANTONESE SO YOU HAVE TO GUESS OR JUST POINT AT WHAT YOU THINK MIGHT BE GOOD, BEWARE CHICKEN FEET ARE A SPECIALITY HERE. MY FRIEND LOVES THEM AND SAID TO ME 'DON'T WORRY THEY TAKE THE NAILS OFF BEFORE THEY COOK THEM!' I SAID THAT ANYTHING THAT HAD TO HAVE IT'S NAILS TAKEN OFF BEFORE IT WAS CONSUMED WAS SOMETHING THAT I DID NOT WANT TO EAT! :) A FEW DAYS AT SCHOOL WE'VE GONE FOR LUNCH TO THIS PLACE WHERE A LOT OF THE KIDS GO. IT IS LITERALLY A WALKWAY OVER A ROAD THAT THEY PUT TABLES AND CHAIRS OUT ON AND SERVE YOU FOOD, ALL VERY DUBIOUS. I'M SURE ATE DOG THERE ON MONDAY! YUCK... ASIDE FROM THE FOOD, SCHOOL HAS BEEN GOOD. MR CHIN AND TERRY, A NEW TEACHER WHO DID PART OF HIS TEACHER TRAINING IN EDINBURGH (SMALL WORLD) TOOK ME AND CHRIS OUT TO LUNCH YESTERDAY WHICH WAS NICE. I NOW FEEL LIKE PART OF THE GANG! I HAVEN'T TAUGHT ANY CLASSES YET AS THIS WEEK WAS MORE OF AN ORIENTATION WEEK, BUT I SAT IN ON A FEW TO GET A GENERAL IDEA OF WHAT TO EXPECT. THEIR ENGLISH IS A BIT WORSE THAN THE SCHOOL WE TRAINED IN SO IT COULD BE A CHALLENGE. IT HAS BEEN RAINING HERE FOR THE LAST FEW DAYS BUT IS STILL ABOUT 30 DEGREES, WHEN IT RAINS IT IS LITERALLY LIKE YOU'RE STEPPING INTO A SHOWER. NEED TO BUY AN UMBRELLA. HAD A BAD EXPERIENCE DURING TRAINING WHEN THE TOP I WAS WEARING TURNED COMPLETELY SEE-THROUGH FROM THE RAIN ON THE WALK TO THE UNDERGROUND, VERY EMBARRASSING! CINEMA TONIGHT, THEN PARTY TOMORROW AND MAYBE A HAIRCUT ON SUNDAY...

August 20th

Yesterday I was meant to go on a tour of Hong Kong with local students but had a bit of a panic about flats, so dragged nicky all over north point looking for apartments. It ended up being a total waste of time because the only one we liked was unfurnished, and the rest were either too expensive, or absolutely minging! So, after all that we have settled on the one we saw first in Wan Chai, so we need to go back to see it again and try and get a good deal! Last night we all went out on a bar crawl in Central, which was wicked fun. Everyone was up for it so it was a good laugh. Ended up getting in at 4am so have spent most of today recovering!

Postings from my old blog...

Right, now I have this new blog here are all my old entries so that everything's in one place!

Aug 17th:

Hi Guys, Just a quick note to let you know that I arrived safely. It's been quite a mad first few days here in HK. So far have just been doing all the work type things that need to get done, so setting up a bank account, sorting out my HK citizens card, finding out which school i'm in... the name of which I can't pronounce and each time I ask someone quickly forget it and have to ask again. But anyway apparently the school is a good one and is in a nice area which is really central which is good for me as I was most scared that I'd be far out in the country and miss out on all the city action! Hong Kong is a mad city, but it doesn't feel too overwhelming. Lots of bright colours and bright lights and too much to take in really. Hopefully I'll feel like a local before too long! Oh, and there's another guy who'll be working in my school so I won't be on my own which is also good. I'll be teaching lower secondary so am quite happy as they'll be old enough to have some english, but young enough to still have fun :) I've also found someone to live with and the flat hunt starts tomorrow so wish me luck. I still need to get a HK sim card for my phone, but you can still text me on my old number it just might cost a bit! Will let you know my number when I have it. That's all for now xoxoxox
<img width='1' height='1'
